Ibaraki Municipal Kawabata Literature Hall
The City of Ibaraki conferred the title of Honorary Citizen on Yasunari Kawabata, the first Japanese to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968, in tribute to his great achievements which gave the citizens a deep sense of pride in the novelist who had his roots in the city. In May 1985 the Ibaraki Municipal Kawabata Literature Hall was dedicated as a center for familiarizing the citizens with the accomplishments of the Nobel laureate.
On display are about 400 items such as books authored by Kawabata, his letters, manuscripts and calligraphic works as well as the scale model of his childhood home, photographs and videos including the Nobel award ceremony in Stockholm.
