Sister and friendship cities
Ibaraki City established a sister city relationship with Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the USA on October 22, 1980, and established a friendship city relationship with Anqing City, Anhui Sheng, China on October 5, 1985.
Exchanges with Minneapolis are held mainly through the International Friendship Association of Ibraki. Starting with mutual official friendship visits, we have had lively exchanges on a civic level in such areas as culture, children’s paintings, correspondence, and boys' soccer.
Ibaraki City concluded a program of promoting a wide level of exchange and cooperation in various fields, such as trade, scientific engineering, culture, education, and gymnastics with Anqing City, and is developing positive exchanges including mutual visits of friendship representatives, exchanges of children’s paintings and calligraphy.
Now Ibaraki City has a firm position as a member of the international community, and wishes to raise young peoples with an international awareness that will support the future of Ibaraki City, have more friendship exchanges with foreign cities, and expand its circle of friendship still wider.
On October 2, 1988, Ibaraki City established ties with Shodoshima Cho (famous as the olive island of Japan). Kagawa Prefecture is our sister city inside Japan. Shodoshima cho occupies 95.62 km2, approximately 60 % of Shodoshima Island. In the town there are many beautiful landscape views and the Kankake Kyo Ravine is said to be the most rare and unusual view in Japan. There are olive gardens and the small local Misaki school, the location of a famous Japanese novel about a heroic teacher and her students, titled “24 eyes.” The climate is mild throughout all four seasons, and lots of people visit Shodoshima for swimming and camping in the summer.
