Emergency calls
If you have an emergency, call either the phone number “110” or “119” (toll free). You can call these numbers for free, even from public phones. To call from a public phone, take the receiver off the hook and press the red button in the front of the phone set.
Fires
To reach a fire house, call 119
If you have a fire, immediately let your neighbors know by shouting. If your house has a fire alarm, press this button. If the fire flares up rapidly, escape to a safe location.
When calling a fire house, say clearly “fire” which in Japanese is: “Kaji desu”
Then tell the fire house your name and address , and explain in more detail.
If you need help or an ambulance
To call a fire house, call 119
If you or a family member has a sudden illness or injury and he/she cannot get to a hospital without help, you may call 119 and ask an ambulance to carry the person for free. However, in that case the ambulance may determine which hospital to send you to, due to your illness, location, and the time. You may not tell them where to go.
Please say clearly, “Ambulance please, which is: Kyukyusha onegai shimasu)” or “there is an injury: kega desu,” or “there is an illness: byoki desu”
Then let the fire house know your name and address , and explain in more detail.
Theft, other crimes, or traffic accidents
To reach a police station, call 110
Simply tell them what was happen. Also, if there is an injury, inform the police so that they can arrange an ambulance. Then let the police officer know your name and address .
Give your address in this order: town name, and then lot number. For example: “Ekimae Sanchome, 8-13.”
Then, give the police officer some target location or building to make it easy for a patrol car or ambulance to get there.
To talk about a crime that is not urgent, please call the Culture and Interpretation Center of the Osaka Police Headquarters (TEL: 06-6943-1234). Someone is available there from 9:00 AM to 5:45 PM who can speak English, Korean, Chinese, French, Thai, or Tagalog
Typhoons
A typhoon is a powerful storm that can occur during the summer or autumn. Before a typhoon arrives, you have to reinforce your glass doors, and close your sliding doors (wooden shutters). Weather forecasts can estimate the approximate route of the typhoon. Please listen to the weather information. You can get disaster information from NHK radio's First Broadcast (666 KHz), the NHK general TV channel, or FMCO・CO・LO (76.5 MHz)
Earthquakes
There are lots of earthquake in Japan. An earthquake comes suddenly. If you feel the ground shaking, immediately turn off any flames on the gas range, and then get outdoors to an open space, such as ground without buildings on it. Do not use the elevator to escape.
Be careful because even after an earthquake stops, aftershocks may still occur.
Ibaraki City Government designates public facilities, such as elementary, junior high, and senior high schools and public halls as shelters. Please check for the location of a nearby shelter in advance.
